Turning a drab space into a welcoming green oasis
We transformed this space into a beautiful, useable garden with plenty of space for entertaining. A low maintenance sanctuary to enjoy all year.
Complete design and renovation
Laid a stunning porcelain terrace
Built two substantial raised sleeper beds, bespoke planters and storage cupboards.
Rebuilt and painted all fencing
Planting plan for interest throughout the year
Clearance of all old astroturf, fencing and rubble
After we had fully prepared the foundation the tiled terrace was laid across the centre of the plot. That began with digging out the rubble and soil, before laying five tonnes of sub-base which was levelled and compacted. Quorn Stone porcelain tiles were selected, as they look great, are incredibly hard wearing and easy to clean.
The fence panels were repaired or replaced, then painted in willow green in a subtle exterior eggshell. This tied them together visually and added a key accent colour which was mirrored with the storage cupboards, built on solid tiled bases, used to keep garden items tucked away.
The long planters were built especially for the space and coloured in a complimentary shade of plum to fit with the planned colour scheme. These were filled with tall grasses, evergreen fatsia japonica, wallflowers, tulips and trailing pelargoniums. The plants selected are all perennials and will grow and spread into the space. The climbing plants will cover the fences using the wires we installed. The clients love to cook outside so we made a pizza table for them too.
The raised bed to the rear was built from substantial railway sleepers which were treated with linseed oil. This was filled with jasmine, hops and grape vines alongside evergreen shrubs, palms and trailing ivy to provide interest throughout the year. In the shadier area ferns, crocosmia, daffodils and Virginia creeper filled the side raised bed which was built up and stained to match the other wood within the garden.

Designing and building a dazzling, tranquil sanctuary from scratch
Having a compact city garden didn’t restrain our ambition on this transformative project, our work included:
Full reclaimed London stock brick courtyard
Side return remodelled with Victorian quarry tiles
Bespoke pergola built from scratch
All walls and fencing restored and painted
Large raised beds built into the space with Victorian oak railway sleepers
Extensive planting of fruit trees, shrubs, vines and flowers, achieving a mature garden in under a year
All seating, dining furniture, lighting, pots and planters sourced for the space
We started with an unloved mess, full of broken concrete and astroturf but the final result is breathtaking. Multiple zones were created so the different areas could be enjoyed for different purposes at different times of day. There are areas to relax, eat and socialise in, and raised beds for growing an abundance of flowers, fruit trees and vegetables.
The first steps were to remove all the waste material then add several tonnes of well rotted manure and topsoil to form a nutrient rich base for the raised beds. These were made with huge reclaimed oak sleepers. The existing walls were solid but lacked charm, so we opted to paint them along with the fence on the remaining side to make them coherent.
After sourcing two sets of vintage Armenian tiles, designed by Marie Balian, we decided to put them up in two areas which needed a little brightening. They were first adhered to an all weather backboard before being secured to the walls. Frames were then made and painted in an oil based exterior paint, in a complimentary colour to the designs.
The rear terrace features a grand pergola, which creates a beautiful secluded area away from the house. It provides cool shade on hot summer days and a cosy nook on autumn nights. A large Lutyens Sissinghurst bench, chiminea and hand made wood stores complete the space.
Reclaimed London stock bricks were sourced for the terraces, which were then laid at the front and back of the garden. They are joined together by a matching brick path with rows of lavender planted either side in gravel beds, a collection of pots provide changing flowers throughout the season. Dining happens at the marble and cast iron dining set, framed by a radiant Gertrude Jekyll rose. There is also a comfortable reclining sofa, perfect for sunbathing in the afternoon.
The side return, with separate access into the house, needed attention. It was levelled, then tiled with beautiful original Victorian quarry tiles and now looks like it’s always been there. Huge planters both at ground level and atop the fences provide space for shrubs, vines, flowers and herbs.
Willow trellises were erected across all walls and fences so the climbing honeysuckle, passion flower and grape vine have plenty to grow on. Behind the trellises went reed screens for added privacy with a softer look. A large overhanging lime tree was cut back during these works and the wood was used to make a bug hotel tucked at the back of the garden.
The raised beds have golden raspberry bushes to provide height close to the fence, whilst the growing frame has helped runner beans, cucumber vines and huge squash plants grow. On the west facing side there are cherry and nectarine trees, strawberries, hops, passion fruit and grape vines.
The plants and flowers have combined to create a garden that is abuzz with bees, birds and butterflies. Beautiful planters have been made to enhance the fences and walls and to provide additional growing space. Careful attention has been paid to successional planting so there is never a moment without colour.

Front Garden
Giving a glow up to a shady front garden to create a pretty, inviting entrance
“Working with James at Ferndale was brilliant. He was really knowledgeable on plants and design and super easy to chat to about what we wanted from the project. Highly recommend!”
Tom & Nikki, Walthamstow Garden Renovation
Re-made the existing fence into a more attractive Venetian style.
Overhauled the border, adding plenty of organic matter and compost.
Whole new planting plan for shade.
Renewed existing fence, pressure washed and tidied the whole area.
Our clients here had a grand front garden but it wasn’t getting the care it deserved. We needed to improve the fencing, tidy up the layout and create a border for year round interest.
The concrete and panelled fence was solid, but just didn’t look good enough, so we opted to cover it up with horizontal, Venetian style, slats which were then stained.
Low maintenance was vital here, as was planting for shade in the north facing space covered by a mature Cotoneaster tree. Evergreen Fatsia Japonica and ferns were selected, as were potted Japanese Maples, Hydrangea Paniculatum, Hellebores, Daphnes, Cyclamens and an array of bulbs. All were backed with Virginia Creepers affixed to wires which will grow up the fence to soften the lines.

Garden Renovation
A complete garden makeover for a huge garden that had been left unloved for several years
“This looks fantastic - cannot believe how much you’ve managed within the timeframe and budget, thank you so much”
Alice, Walthamstow Garden Renovation
Clearing the huge overgrown space and re-establishing the beds with corten steel edging
Sympathetic, plant focused restoration, saving and nurturing the existing plants wherever possible
Upgrading the fencing, including staining
Building new natural paths
Cleaning and re-grouting the stone terrace
Re-seeding and improving the lawn
New planting on the terrace and throughout the garden to create a stunning final result
After the garden had been abandoned by the previous residents we needed to do a complete overhaul. The overgrown lawn was cleared and weeded so we could then re-establish the beds in a naturalistic curved layout with clear demarcation with subtle corten steel edging. The beds within the terrace were also cleared before we added fresh soil and new drought tolerant planting with lavender, canary palms, bay trees, lemon balm, cordylines and geraniums. Paths and beds were added as were a swathe of foxgloves in the woodland area to the rear.
The fencing was all repaired and stained to bring the look together and make the disparate elements looks cohesive and the stone terrace was cleaned and re-grouted to bring it all back to its former glory.
